5 Comforting Psalms to Pray Against Anxiety

Have you tried praying the Psalms against your anxiety?

The book of Psalms, found in the Old Testament, is a wonderful collection of peaceful songs, prayers, and other compositions mostly written by King David.

David was dubbed as a ‘man after God’s own heart’, so his heartfelt prayers are certainly the blueprint for restoring relationships and healing during times of high anxiety and stressful times.

Psalms is a favorite book for many; it plays a huge role in defining how God wants us to talk to Him. God appreciated David’s love for Him, so we should remember its importance during intimacy with the Heavenly Father.

It’s no wonder that Psalms can be found in many hymns across the world and used as a valuable resource of prayer and mediation!

The Bible is full of encouragement to help calm us when we are feeling anxious about things in our lives.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 NIV

Emotions can be overwhelming and deceiving, yet, we can use them to our advantage. Instead of dwelling on these negative reactions, it can be our trigger to instantly connect with God in an intense way.

Praying the Psalms can be our water when we are thirsty, food when we are hungry, and peace when we are anxious.

Are you overcome with feelings of stress and worry? Do you have trouble focusing on the tasks at hand?

If so, it is time to pull out your Bible and read passages of Psalms while praying against your anxiety.

Comforting Psalms for Anxiety

The world seems to be falling into disarray more and more every day.

The news and social media are full of things that can quickly put us in a state of panic and cause our anxieties to boil over to an unhealthy level.

So many things can trigger our anxieties:

  • health issues
  • marriage struggles
  • our children
  • finances
  • work
  • school

But our God is bigger than the things that cause our anxiety!

Praying through the Psalms for anxiety is the perfect way to keep God’s promises ahead of our worries and fears.

Throughout this abundant and practical collection of poetry, the focal point of the author is praising Him and passing on all of our negative feelings to Him.

Below are five beautiful Psalms to pray over and meditate on when those feelings of anxiety start creeping in.

Psalm for Anxiety Psalm 94 19

Psalm 94:19

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:19 NIV

When you feel those feelings of anxiety surfacing in your mind, just remember that God literally tells us not to be anxious because He has everything under control!

Replace those anxious feelings with the joy of knowing the Father will work it all out for your good.

Psalm for Anxiety Psalm 27 1

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

When the feelings of anxiety start boiling in your mind, take a pause and remember that God is in control – not you!

Let Him be your stronghold. Let Him be the one you run to when you are anxious because He is more powerful than anything of this world.

Psalm for Anxiety Psalm 16 8

Psalm 16:8

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8

No matter what comes my way each day – and lately, it seems like a total wave of things – knowing that God is at my side keeps my anxiety at a distance.

It’s not to say I don’t have negative thoughts. I do! But knowing that the outcome is not in my hands helps me to rest a bit easier.

Psalm for Anxiety Psalm 62 8

Psalm 62:8

Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8

When you are beginning to feel anxious about something, just talk to God about it! Oftentimes, we let the feelings build up in our minds and that is not healthy!

God wants us to give Him our burdens so that He carries them – not us.

Pour out your feelings to Him and find peace in knowing that He hears you.

Psalm for Anxiety Psalm 34 4-5

Psalm 34:4-5

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. Psalm 34:4-5

When we seek God above all else, He will answer our prayers.

Let the Father deliver you from your fears and anxiety so you can live peacefully in His mighty presence.

Psalm Prayer for Anxiety

Psalm Prayer for Anxiety

Dear Heavenly Father, I bow before you with my heavy heart. These bouts of anxiety are overwhelming and the weight of this burden cannot be carried anymore with frail, weak shoulders. Yet, your promises in your Word remind me to cast all of these burdens on You, and your strength will be made perfect in my weakness. Carry on, my Lord, it’s time for me to release them to You. I’m so thankful you’ve got this now. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Throughout our lives, we will experience things that cause our minds to race and cause anxious feelings to want to consume our thoughts.

But when we keep our eyes fixed on God, our anxiety won’t have room to grow.

Praying through the Psalms for anxiety is a great way to keep God close and to remind us that He is in control and that He is stronger than the things of this world.

He will make a way even when there doesn’t seem one possible.

Fix your eyes on Him and force your anxiety to take a backseat to His mighty presence!
