Prayers for a Broken Heart

Does God hear our prayers for a broken heart? Yes, He does. In fact, Scripture specifically addresses broken hearts in several places. Here is one of them.

Praying for someone with a broken heart is an important act of kindness and compassion. Praying can bring comfort and peace to the person in need of healing.

It can also help to remind us that we are not alone in our struggles and that we can find strength in our faith. Praying can also help to lift the spirits of those affected and can provide strength to get through difficult times.

It also serves to remind us of the power of love and that there is always hope, even in the darkest of moments.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 (ESV)

Prayer for the Broken Hearted

Prayer for the Broken Hearted

Sometimes our hearts are more than broken. The trauma can be so great we feel crushed. But will not abandon us in those situations.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

Lord, I am hurting. I feel crushed and there is nothing I can do to change what happened. But I am grateful that you are bigger than all of this. I thank you that you have a plan for putting the pieces of my heart back together.

You have said that you will not leave me alone. So, I call out to you, knowing that you love me dearly and are right here helping me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer to Heal a Broken Heart

What does God say about healing a broken heart?

Just like a physician binds up broken bones in a cast for proper healing, God binds up our broken hearts.

Thankfully, since most of us will at some point experience a broken heart, there are those who have documented their testimonies of God healing their broken hearts. Their stories can be a huge encouragement.

You may be asking, “What does God do for the Brokenhearted?”  How does healing take place? God has a personal prescription for each of us. He will give us Scriptures, songs, friends, or a host of other things that are just what we need.

Dear Jesus, I know that you are no stranger to being hurt by people and life circumstances. I am so grateful that you care about this broken heart of mine.

I can picture you gently holding the pieces of my heart in your hands and bandaging them together. What a beautiful mental picture. I thank you that you are the God who heals. In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer to Find Purpose in a Broken Heart

Much of life is out of our control. Yet God has promised that He will bring about good from those very situations that leave our hearts in pieces.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 ESV

When we remember this wonderful promise, it makes it possible to accept our circumstances and move on. Yes, it may still hurt, but we can have confidence that what we have experienced will not be wasted.

So, with these words from Scripture, we can pray:

Lord, my heart is aching. I am grateful that you understand these feelings. More importantly, thank you that you will make something good from what I have gone through.

So help me accept what I cannot change because there will be a purpose to be found. Thank you that you will always be here for me because you never change. Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer to Forgive those Who Break Our Hearts

Forgive? If someone breaks our heart, why should we forgive them? That thinking seems reasonable, doesn’t it? But God’s ways are not our ways.

The truth is that when we don’t forgive, bitterness sets in with consequences much worse than a broken heart. I have seen bitterness destroy all of a person’s relationships, one by one. It is a slow and painful downhill spiral.

The first step toward healing from your broken heart is to forgive the person who caused it. Let go of that anger and give it over to God so He can replace it with healing.

Lord, it is so hard to forgive sometimes. Yet you have shown us that in the hardest situations, forgiveness is possible.

I am grateful that I don’t have to try to prove that the one who broke my heart was in the wrong. Thank you that you will set the records straight someday. In the meantime, help me to let go and forgive. Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer for Strength After a Broken Heart

Broken hearts can leave us feeling weak. We can have trouble getting up in the morning to take care of our responsibilities. This Scripture describes it well.

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 ESV

Lord, just like the Psalmist, ‘my flesh and heart are failing.’ How I praise you that I don’t have to rely on my own strength right now.

Thank you that you are bigger and stronger than what I have gone through. Help me to remember that you want to trade your strength for my weakness. You and I are a great team! Amen

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer for Direction After a Broken Heart

When our hearts are in pieces, it often comes with important decisions that need to be made about the future. How daunting it can be. Yet, we don’t have to do it alone.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Lean on God and let Him guide you in moving forward. Cry out to God in prayer!

Lord, I don’t know what the future holds, and I am tempted to be afraid. Instead, I choose to trust you to direct me. What a comfort it is to know that since you know all things you also know what I need to do.

Lord, you have said that when we need wisdom, you will give it to us. All I have to do is ask. Thank you for this promise. I choose to trust you for your wisdom and plans for my life. Amen

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer for When You Want to Cry Over a Broken Heart

We are assured that our broken hearts won’t last forever. This too shall pass.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 ESV

When you feel like crying over your broken heart, instead, cry out to God! Only He can heal the pain you are going through and make you whole again.

Lord, sometimes I wonder if my heart will ever stop hurting. Thank you that you care about my feelings.

I choose now to believe your promise that you will dry my tears little by little. Thank you that you are the God of all comfort.

I am also grateful that you will bring others into my life to encourage me. And as I heal, may I become the encourager for someone else. Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer to Keep Moving Forward After a Broken Heart

Many times, I have prayed, “Lord I can’t do this without your help.” Sometimes those are the only words that we need to speak. But other times we might pray:

Lord, sometimes I feel like I can’t make it through another day. But I know that you want to help me keep moving forward. I know you want me to keep living life with purpose.

Lord, sharing your love with those around me is a wonderful purpose for living. I look forward to the day when I can help others by encouraging them through their own heartbreak. Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer Against Loneliness After a Broken Heart

Because broken hearts often involve the loss of relationships, there are bound to be periods of loneliness.

Thankfully, God has given us opportunities for relationships with others who love Him. Sometimes they are closer than family.

Even better is the fact that we are never alone if we love God. He is always with us and wants us to talk to Him. So, when we are feeling lonely, we can pray:

Lord, right now I am feeling lonely. But you have said that you will never leave me. Help me to think about you being here right now. As a child would climb into their father’s lap, help me to picture you holding me.

Even if the most important ones in my life abandon me, you never will, Lord. I am surrounded by your love and compassion. Help me never forget that. Amen.

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Prayer for Peace After a Broken Heart

Too often people rehash past events over and over. This just leads to more emotional pain.

Scripture says that it is important to change our thoughts (Romans 12:1-2). Here is God’s prescription for what we are to think about:

“… Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise … Then the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9 NLT

With these Bible verses, we can pray:

Lord, right now I am feeling restless and without peace.

Even though my heart is broken, I choose to think about the many good things I still have in my life. I choose to remember that you still love me. You won’t leave me when others have. And you won’t disappoint me when others will.

Help me to remember your words since they are the truth that will set me free. Amen

Prayer for a Broken Heart

Intercessory Prayer for a Broken Heart

Someone once said, “Be the friend who stands in the gap and prays when your friend has no strength to pray.” (Author unknown)

But how should you pray for someone with a broken heart?

You can pray an Intercessory prayer on their behalf.

You can pray something like this:

Father, God, I pray for my friend as their heart has been broken. I know they are hurting in many ways.

Lord, you have said that you are near to those with broken hearts and crushed spirits. Help them to be aware of your presence. Help them to realize they are not alone in this difficult situation.

And then Father, as the Great Physician, I ask you to heal their heart just as Scripture says.

I know they wish things were different, but these things are out of their control. Help them to realize that you are going to make something good out of this terrible situation.

May you Lord be the strength of their heart. Give them direction and wisdom as there are going to be some hard decisions to make. Thank you for understanding all of this and you already know what the solution will be.

Lord, help them to accept this situation that they cannot change. Help them to realize that it is possible to do all things through Christ Jesus even though it might seem impossible.

Please, Lord, give them the peace that only you can give. Direct their thoughts so the emotional pain can be at a minimum.

Thank you for your loving care for those with broken hearts and crushed spirits. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
