Now more than ever, we need prayers for deliverance against addiction. These false idols promise instant gratification, but before long, many become hopelessly lost.
It is hard to find someone whose family has not been touched in some way by alcohol, drugs, gambling, or other addictions such as pornography. We need to arm ourselves because this is spiritual warfare.
Later this year, by the grace of God, I will pick up a medallion for 20 years of sobriety! I have also faced addiction in my family. Prayers have been my most powerful weapon. They have been my armor.
Ephesians 6:11-12 (NIV) “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Powerful Prayers for Deliverance from Addiction
Scripture reminds us that the prayers of a righteous person are powerful. 20 years ago, I was a dangerous drunk driver, careless and selfish. But I had people praying for me!
James 5:16 (NIV)” Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Those prayers for my deliverance worked, and your prayers can too.
Here are some powerful prayers to pray over your loved ones. They can be personalized with the name of your loved one.
Dear Lord, we lift up those who struggle with sobriety. May they feel your presence. Put the right thought or action in front of them and banish the compulsions from the evil one. Open doors that offer help. Keep them in your loving arms one day at a time.
Bless their family members, rehab workers, counselors, law enforcement personnel, and all others who may guide them. May they be a lamp to light the way towards your mercies. Give them the courage to walk in truth and not enable. Amen.
A Prayer for Deliverance from Addiction to Drugs
I have a loved one who is currently in the grip of drug addiction. When I pray for her, I combine prayers for freedom with a specific prayer for protection.
I also pray that she hit bottom. It is necessary for those who struggle with addiction to get the gift of desperation. They must acknowledge their brokenness and turn to the Lord.
As C.S. Lewis famously put it we must “come to the end of ourselves.”
Dear Lord, We pray for release from this bondage to drugs. Allow your Holy Spirit to touch their heart with a desire to change, and with an admission of powerlessness.
We petition earnestly for your divine protection from an overdose. If they have not hit bottom yet, we pray that they do so in safety so that they may seek you, Lord, and get the help that they need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Prayer from Deliverance from Addiction to Alcohol
There is a saying in the rooms of recovery that alcohol is “cunning, baffling, and powerful.” For years, I lived a double life. I appeared put together on the outside while I was dying on the inside.
Just because someone has not lost their job or gone to jail, does not mean that they cannot struggle with alcohol.
Because it is legal and socially acceptable in moderate amounts, alcohol is perhaps the sneakiest of the addictions. However, it is also the deadliest, killing more people each year than opioids.
We must pray for the deliverance of those struggling with alcohol addiction.
Ephesians 5:18: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit”
Dear Lord. We pray for release from this bondage to alcohol. Allow your Holy Spirit to touch their heart with a desire to change, and with an admission of powerlessness.
If they have not hit bottom yet, we pray that they do so in safety so that they may get the help that they need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Prayer for Deliverance from Porn
The Lord created us with natural instincts and desires. Sexual urges are God-given, but when they become unbalanced it opens a door for Satan.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV): “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Some participants may argue that they aren’t hurting anyone, or that they are not actually cheating. However, this is a lie.
Marriages and relationships are shattered by porn. The human body was created in God’s image and should not be objectified.
Dear Lord. We pray for release from this bondage to pornography. Allow your Holy Spirit to touch their heart with a desire to change, and with an admission of powerlessness.
Give them the desire to seek help. Open their eyes to your divine purpose for the human body and the sanctity of marriage. Let this abomination become as detestable to them as it is to you. Amen.
A Prayer for Deliverance from Gambling
Gambling is a legal activity, but the enemy uses it as a doorway to destroy lives.
It is not unusual to see TV ads glorifying gambling and highlighting the big winners. Satan loves to tempt us with get-rich-quick schemes.
The Bible warns us against foolish spending.
Proverbs 13:22 “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.”
Let us pray for those who are tempted by gambling and ask for God to deliver them from these chains of bondage.
Dear Lord. We pray for release from this bondage to gambling. Allow your Holy Spirit to touch their heart with a desire to change, and with an admission of powerlessness.
Give them the desire to seek help. Open their eyes to your divine purpose for the money that you give them and for family finances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
It is not uncommon for people to suffer from more than one addiction. One often feeds the other. However, they all have one solution: Jesus Christ. Remember, our prayers are powerful.
Today, my husband, Rob, and I have been freed from alcohol, drugs, and gambling for many years. This year we will celebrate 44 years of marriage.

This change did not occur overnight. I drank excessively for two decades. If you are frustrated with your situation, keep praying and wait for the Lord’s timing.
