8 Powerful Prayers for Alcoholics

Alcohol addiction can lead to the destruction of a person’s life, dreams, and health. It also results in the breakdown of families and loss of livelihood. Breaking free from the bondage of alcohol abuse is not easy. That’s why prayers for alcoholics are so important.

It’s hard for someone who is tangled in sin to break free from it on their own. Most times the will is there but the addiction is too strong. The disappointment in themselves and sheer helplessness for not being able to quit can result in more alcohol abuse. And then it becomes a vicious cycle.

The reason why Jesus Christ came to die on the cross and rise again was to set us free from the bondage of sin. If we could save ourselves, then Jesus wouldn’t have come.

Expecting our loved ones who struggle with alcoholism to quit on their own is not realistic. They need prayer, support, and rehabilitation.

This is not an easy journey. It takes time and a lot of patience. Through these prayers for alcoholics, we can learn to trust and rely on God’s power to help anyone suffering from addiction.

Prayers for Alcoholics

In the story of the woman caught in adultery, we see that Jesus asked the people accusing the woman to stone her if they were without sin. And one, by one they all left the scene because we’re all sinners. Jesus then told the woman that he doesn’t condemn her and set her free.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV

God doesn’t want us to judge people’s sins and think we are better because we don’t have an alcohol addiction. Rather, we should encourage and strengthen those caught up in this destructive habit.

As we pray for alcoholics, we do so with faith that we are victorious and more than conquerors through Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Alcoholics

A General Prayer for Alcoholics

Anyone struggling with alcohol addiction needs prayer to develop a strong hatred for alcohol and sin. Once they do this and experience the renewal of the mind, they can start the journey to healing and recovery.

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age, Titus 2:11-12 NIV

It’s only by the grace of God that we can have self-control when we are tempted. As humans, we are weak so we need the all-powerful God to help us break free from sin and strongholds.

Heavenly Father, l am grateful for the power we find in Jesus Christ. On our own, we are hopeless and helpless but in you, we are victorious.

I pray for those bound in alcohol addiction that through your grace they may be able to resist and refuse its hold on their lives. May they turn away from the world of alcoholism and experience your love, mercy, and kindness.

Give them strength and hope in their time of need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for Alcoholics to Seek God

It’s only as they seek God that alcoholics will find true freedom and strength to quit the addiction they are struggling with.

envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:21 NLT

Our prayer is that they would seek God knowing that he is near to those who are humble and broken-hearted.

We want them to inherit eternal life as well but that can only happen as they allow God to help them transform their lives.

Lord, we pray for those suffering from alcohol addiction. They are your children and you are always near them. May they be transformed in their mind and hate sin and believe in your name.

I pray they would repent and seek your face because you are a rewarder of those who love and seek you wholeheartedly. Forgive their sins and help them to forgive themselves too.

Give them the desire to live a life that pleases you so they can experience eternal life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for Alcoholics to Have the Strength to Quit

An alcoholic may want to quit alcohol but they may not have the strength to do it because it’s a stronghold in their life.  They need to rely on God’s power to be able to resist the urge to keep drinking.

He gives strength to the weary, And to him who has no might He increases power. Isaiah 40:29 AMP

It’s only God who gives them the hope to keep trying and pushing without ever giving up even if they relapse. So we pray for strength and hope for them to be able to quit this addiction.

Merciful God, we pray for strength for those who are fighting to break free from this addiction. Your word says those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength and they will never be weary or grow faint.

Help them not to give up and remember that they can do all things through Jesus Christ who gives them strength. May they depend on you as you are their refuge, rock, and deliverer.

I pray that they may be courageous and trust that you will increase their power when they’re weak. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for Alcoholics to Be Set Free From Alcoholism

Jesus came to break free the chains of any and every addiction that holds us hostage including alcohol addiction. He is the one who can give us true and lasting freedom from sin.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 ESV

It’s the truth of God’s word that sets us free from being slaves to addiction. As we meditate on his word, our minds are set free from bondage and the lies of the enemy.

Lord Jesus, you have the power to break the bondage of sin by your precious blood that was shed on the cross.

Give those suffering from alcohol addiction faith to believe that they can truly be set free by the blood of Jesus. May they come to know and experience your peace, love, and joy and find contentment in you alone.

There is power in the name of Jesus Christ to set them free from being slaves to alcohol. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for Alcoholics to be Filled with the Holy Spirit

When Jesus left the earth, he left us with the Holy Spirit who would be in us always. We are never alone during battles because the Holy Spirit fights for us and with us.

Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him. Ephesians 5:18 AMP

As we pray, let’s ask the Holy Spirit to fill those who are fighting alcohol addiction so that they would be guided to change their lifestyle.

Father, please fill those struggling with alcohol abuse with the Holy Spirit. May they be guided by him alone to lead a fulfilling life that brings glory to You.

May the Holy Spirit be their helper when they are weak and comfort them when they are in pain. I pray that the fruit of the Holy Spirit particularly self-control would be evident in their lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for the Healing and Recovery of Alcoholics

The path to healing and recovery for an alcoholic may be long and hard. But with God it’s possible. Jesus Christ healed many when he was on earth and we believe that same power today can heal those struggling.

Recovering from alcohol addiction can be made hard because of old friends and drinking buddies who may still be addicts. So we need to pray for support for those who are struggling to find new friends and a new purpose in their lives.

Lord Jesus, your word says by your stripes we are healed. I pray that those that are struggling with alcohol addiction may be healed in your name. May they find the help and support they need from those around them on their path to recovery. We know that nothing is too hard for you Lord.

Give those bound by addiction new friends and a new purpose to help them soldier on in their recovery path. As you are the God of miracles, please perform a miracle in their life and give them a testimony of your power at work in their lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for the Mind of the Alcoholic to be Renewed

Alcohol addiction is a very difficult thing to overcome. Praying for those with addiction can be a powerful tool to help them.

If a person was drinking in their free time, they need to fill that time with other productive activities so that their mind is not idle and they don’t start craving alcohol again.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT

They need to start new healthy activities to keep them sober and occupied. This could be reading, playing sports, or taking up a new hobby.

As Christians, we also want to encourage them to read and meditate on God’s word as it has the power to renew their minds.

Our loving God, you have the power to renew our minds and help us focus on your word. Help those trying to recover from being alcoholics to start focusing on things that build them, their health, and their spirits in a positive and godly way.

Remove any cravings from their minds and may they learn to reach out to you in prayer anytime they need help. May they always remember that your will is for them to be sober, righteous, and obedient children in your kingdom. In Jesus’ name l pray. Amen.

Prayer for Alcoholics

Prayer for an Alcoholic’s family

One of the enemy’s main ploys and schemes is to make us believe he doesn’t exist and that those who are hurting us are the enemy. We want to pray for the families of the alcoholic not to see that person as the enemy but rather as someone who needs help.

An alcoholic’s family goes through a difficult journey. They need strength to support the person struggling. Let’s remember them as well in our prayers.

Lord, we come to you on behalf of the families and loved ones of those suffering from alcohol abuse.

You know their pain and challenges. Strengthen them as they seek to support the person with an addition. Teach them to show love, kindness, patience, and compassion to the person struggling with excess alcohol intake.

Remind them that their loved one is not the enemy but that the person is tormented by sin and addiction and in need of God’s healing and grace. In Jesus’ name l pray. Amen.

The life of an alcoholic is not easy. This addiction can have a stronghold in one’s life. The damage to one spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally can be huge.

We need to join hands with those struggling and encourage them through the word of God and prayer. As we strengthen and support them in their journey to be sober and healed, we should keep trusting and believing in the power of God who loves and cares for all of us.

There is no reason to judge or condemn those in addiction. God just asks us to love each other because we all fall short of the glory of God. May these prayers for alcoholics bring hope and healing to those fighting to quit and recover from alcohol abuse.
