Are you looking for some prayers to battle feelings of loneliness and depression?
Loneliness is an emotion that comes out of a lack of connection with other people. This can be when we spend long periods of time on our own, or equally when we are with other people. It is the lack of connection that makes us feel sad.
Powerful prayers are those that align themselves with the truth revealed in God’s word. We can pray with confidence when we ask according to God’s will, then we have an assurance that He hears and will answer our prayer. Scripture is quite clear that God never intended us to be alone.

Praying Against Loneliness and Depression
It is not good for us to be alone because we were created for relationships – to connect with God and with one another.
Scripture teaches us that the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love our neighbor. To give, and receive, love and care are fundamental to who we are – and we feel lost without those connections.
When we feel lonely, we need to recognize the emotion and start to rebuild those connections. The danger of loneliness is self-pity – feeling sorry for ourselves is a downward spiral.
The best, and only way, to stop feeling lonely is to take our eyes off our own situation, focus on God. It is also crucial that we understand the importance of praying!
When we lift our eyes to God in prayer and start to draw near to Him, He promises to draw near to us because He cares for us. As we remind ourselves of the promises of God and turn to Him in prayer, our perspective changes.
We receive comfort from God’s word, as our minds are filled with the truth of His word. There are times when we may be on our own, but we realize once again that we are never alone!

Scriptures to Pray Against Loneliness
The Bible is filled with uplifting and encouraging scripture to combat loneliness!
Focusing upwards on who we are in Christ has the power to change everything. Through God’s word, we remind ourselves of our identity in Christ Jesus and how much we are loved by our Heavenly Father.
His word is truth, and His word is more powerful than our feelings. God seeks us out with a lavish and abundant love, demonstrated by Jesus in giving His life for us.
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10 NIV
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
Focusing on the truth of God’s word and reminding ourselves of his good promises builds our faith. We receive comfort and strength as we bring our prayers and requests to God.
He knows how we feel, but we can talk to him about how we feel and leave our concerns with Him.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Focusing on the Lord, rather than on our own situation, starts to change our perspective. We receive comfort from the knowledge that we are not alone, that God is ever-present with us, and He is attentive to our situation.
- “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
- “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
- “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
- “Praise be to the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
- “so, in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5
- “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.” Ephesians 2:19
Continue meditating on these scriptures as you pray for those who are feeling lonely and depressed – or to help combat your feelings of despair.
We are not looking to form or build relationships out of need, but from a position of strength. We are part of the family of God, and we are trusting in our Heavenly Father. He has a purpose and a place for each one of us.
Prayers Against Loneliness
When you or a loved one is struggling with feelings of loneliness, the only way to fill that void is with a deep connection with God.
Prayer through times of loneliness has the power to change the experience, from one of desperation to one of spiritual growth, as we place our trust in God.
Use the example prayers against loneliness to remind you that you are never alone because God is always with you!
Heavenly Father, I thank you for the time to pause and to be still before you. I thank you for this season of my life, I trust in your Sovereignty and know that you are here. I praise you for the promise that your presence is with me and that I am never alone.
I ask for a change in my perspective that I might see your goodness and your hand at work in my life. I ask that I might hear the whisper of your comfort deep in my spirit with a deeper awareness of your love surrounding me at this time. Amen.
Prayer for Loneliness and Depression
Sometimes our feelings of loneliness can threaten to overwhelm us, and we may need to seek intervention from medical professionals. Most of us wouldn’t delay in asking for help for a physical ailment but are slow to recognize our need for emotional healing.
Whether we need additional help, or not, there is healing power in prayer directing our journey. We can bring all our needs to the Lord, believing in His restoration and healing touch by whatever possible means.
Use this example prayer for loneliness and depression:
Thank you, Lord, that you know how I feel for you know me better than I know myself. I praise you for your unfailing love and never-ending care. I pray that you would lead and guide my healing journey. I ask for rest in your presence and that I may receive your comfort today.
Help me to know that there is no darkness where your light cannot shine, that I need not be afraid, for you are with me every step of the way. I believe in the promise of your word, that your grace is sufficient, and you can renew and restore my strength. Amen.
Prayer for the Lonely and Broken Hearted
There may be times in our lives when we experience loneliness and suffer loss. This is never our choice but unwelcome circumstances that come against us as we live in a broken world.
The loss of health or of a loved one can feel overwhelming. But the truth of God’s word tells us that Jesus came to bind up the brokenhearted and to bring comfort to those who mourn, with a ministry of healing and restoration.
Jesus is with us in the process of our grief, weeping with us, and interceding for us. We are not alone; the presence of the Holy Spirit anoints our wounds to bring healing and a promise to replace our despair with praise.
Use this example prayer for the lonely and brokenhearted:
Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you know how I feel. You are not remote but are with me on every step of my journey, and you are here now. Help me to receive comfort through the promises of your word today. I thank yo
u that my hope is not based on my feelings but on the truth of your love and faithfulness. I praise you, that I need not fear the future because you go ahead of me, and you will provide all the strength that I need. Amen.
Prayer for Loneliness and Companionship
We all crave relationships and a connection with God and with other people. Our lives can be busy and full of people but without our spiritual relationship with God still feel empty and meaningless.
When we commit our lives to the Lord, Jesus is the friend who is always by our side. He is our true companion, the One who will never let us down. The blessing of godly friendships is within God’s gift and we place our trust in Him that He will provide for all our needs.
Lord Jesus, I praise you and thank you for the gift of friendship, that you are my constant companion. I thank you that you place the lonely in families and that true friendship is your gift. You know that it is not good for us to be alone and are able to supply all our needs.
I pray for godly friends to counsel and support me, but also that I might be an encouragement to others. Direct my path to connect with those who will build up and strengthen my faith. I ask that I might receive the confidence to reach out and to share your love with those you place around me. Amen.
Prayer for the Deliverance from the Spirit of Loneliness
When Jesus knew that His ministry on this earth was coming to an end, He comforted His disciples. He assured them that they would not be left alone.
Jesus promised to ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, who would help them and be with them forever. When we commit our lives to the Lord Jesus, we too receive that promise.
We are not alone, and God’s word is the truth over our lives. The Holy Spirit is our peace and brings the grace of God, His power and love, into our lives. We can pray for deliverance from any negative mindset that opposes the truth of God’s word.
Dear Lord Jesus, I thank you that you came to release those who are bound by oppression. I believe in the truth of your word, and that I can have freedom from fear. I thank you now, that I am loved by you with an everlasting love. I am not alone, for you are with me all the time, when I am aware of your presence and when I am not.
I pray that you would deliver me from all negative thoughts of abandonment and fill me with joy and a fresh awareness of your love. Help me to take captive those negative thoughts and choose to meditate on the truth of your grace and love over my life. Amen.
Prayer for the Sick and Lonely
One of the greatest trials we face in life is sickness. The direction of our life can change dramatically, and fear can overwhelm us that we have lost control. Our plans can be put on hold or canceled.
Physically we may be in pain and suffering and feeling very alone. In the hardest times when we feel discouraged, help is there. We can draw near to the Lord, with the assurance of His promise that He will draw near to us. This is the time, more than ever, to depend on God trusting in His restoring, healing, power.
Here is an example of a prayer for the sick and lonely:
Dear God, I am finding it hard to pray, I am struggling through sickness, and feel very alone. Lead me to a place of peace, and the refreshing comfort of your presence. I pray for your healing power over my life, that you will provide wisdom for the Doctors and the correct treatment that I need.
Help me to endure patiently, and to trust in you for all the strength that I need. I ask that your power would be made perfect in my weakness and that I will be strengthened, physically and spiritually. Amen.
I hope you find comfort and encouragement in knowing that God can and always will fill a void of loneliness!
These are powerful prayers for loneliness because they are founded on Scripture, the truth of God’s word. The reality is that sometimes we must battle with our own thoughts and feelings, to move forward, and for our faith to grow and deepen.
I know what it is like to feel lonely. When I first got married, we moved away from our hometown, our family, and our church friends. My husband had a service job, and we moved several times in the first ten years. It was hard to make new friends and find and fit in, to a new church.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 NIV
I was often on my own, things were not the same as they had been at ‘home.’ The new people that I met were not the same, and I found it hard to connect with anyone.
But God does not change. He proves Himself faithful, over, and over again. My knowledge and experience of God grew through that season. God hears and answers our prayers, not always in the way that we expect but He will provide all that we need.
